Jake was born in New Orleans, grew up in Brookhaven, Mississippi, Dallas, Texas and Darien, Connecticut and has lived as far afield as Lagos, Nigeria, where his father’s business took him. After a two year stint in the Marines during the Vietnam war era, he graduated with a degree in Fine Art from Middlebury College in 1968. He fell in love with the landscape and atmosphere of Vermont and made it his permanent residence.

Jake describes his paintings:

I see two ways when I look around at the landscape. First, there is the figurative story with the atmosphere you can walk into and feel. Second, more importantly for me, there is the abstract arrangement of shadow shapes and light patches - pieces of colored paint.

At best, my paintings are balanced between the two, invitational and relational.
